Frequently Asked Questions About Equine Assisted Learning

What Is Equine Assisted Learning?

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a method of partnering with horses in order to learn skills that apply in all areas of life.  Participants can focus on interpersonal skills, leadership development or other areas based on their needs.

Who Can Benefit The Most from Equine Assisted Learning

Everyone!  All of us benefit from new, challenging experiences.  The focus of EAL sessions at Still Waters is the development of healthy relationships, it just so happens we’re doing it with horses.  The fundamental principles and skills are universal.

Does this program focus on ground work or riding?

Both!  We often begin working on the ground with horses in order to learn specific relational skills.  When both the horse and the human are ready, that relationship progresses to riding.

What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a form of therapy or counseling that partners with horses to address mental health concerns.  It is facilitated with a licensed mental health professional.  At this time, Still Waters does not offer EAP sessions.  We would be happy to provide a reference to EAP practitioners in the area.

Do I need my own horse?

While our main focus is coaching individuals and programs that gave their own horses, Still Waters equine can provide horses for lessons on a limited, case by case basis.

Will you train my horse for me?

We do not offer a traditional horse training as a service.  However, we are happy to coach you in starting your young horse, addressing problem behaviors or developing a foundation for your performance goals. We can team with you to support your goals and build a highly functional relationship with your horse.

Just Breathe…

Breathing.  It’s an obvious, clear cut necessity for life.  It’s so obvious, in fact, that we rarely even think about it, let alone put any effort into doing it well.  I was challenged to work on the quality of my breathing by a coach a few months ago....

Holy Baader-Meinhof Batman! It’s Polyvagal Theory

Have you ever noticed that right after you learn something new, you tend to notice it happening around you over and over? Turns out, there is actually a name for this! It's called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. Recently, my experience with this phenomenon is to do...
